Overview - DL Methionine

DL-methionine is an essential amino acid that is included in animal feed. Apart from its critical role as a protein building block and precursor to cysteine, methionine participates in the metabolism of choline, creatine, and adrenaline via the methyl donor pathway, where it releases a methyl group and forms S-adenosyl-methionine.
Thus, DL-methionine plays a significant role in intermediate metabolism in an indirect manner

DL-Methionine nowadays was synthesized by fermentation route with the
bacteria Corynebacterium glutamicum

Common features are often found in methionine biosynthesis pathways using various microorganisms. Typically convertion from aspartate to 4-phospoaspartate by aspartate kinase followed by formation of aspartate semi-aldehyde with help of aspartalddehyde dehydrogenase. The semi-aldehyde is oxidised to produce homoserine . It undergoes condensation to produce O-succinylhomoserine with assist of AcetylCoA.

Methionine production from O-succinylhomoserine is possible through two different ways, either through cystathionine homocysteine production or directly converts it to homocysteine by the help of transulfurilation. After the formation of homocysteine the methylation took place and 5-methyltetrahydrofolate plays as methyl donor in methionine formation.
